The Dark Side of Social Media for Small Creators: Copyright Theft, Impersonation & Burnout

The Dark Side of Social Media for Small Creators: Copyright Theft, Impersonation & Burnout

Here I am, wide awake at 3 a.m., trying to piece together a strategy that could help fund my children's activities, cover legal fees, and maybe—just maybe—surprise them with the trip to Disney they've been begging for. A trip that once felt so attainable is now overshadowed by looming threats: copyright, impersonation, and the relentless march of demonetization. I feel like I’m running on fumes, juggling the demands of our social media presence, managing the household, being a supportive wife, homeschooling four kids, shuttling them to all their activities, and somehow finding moments to care for myself amidst it all.

Social media was once a source of joy and connection, but now it feels like an anchor weighing me down. The toll it's taking on my physical and mental health is palpable. I find myself exhausted from the never-ending battle against impersonators and copyright violators who believe they have the right to exploit my family's journey for their gain.

What began as a shared family adventure—a chance to showcase my children's skills, inspire others, and creatively fund their training, travel, and tournaments—has turned into a frustrating nightmare. Instead of uplifting content that showcases our lives authentically, we now see our stories twisted and shared without context by content farmers. These individuals churn out content at a ludicrous pace to drive traffic to their own pages, capitalizing on the emotions and experiences we've taken years to cultivate.

Does their activity boost traffic to our pages? Absolutely not. Is it advertising anything about us? Not in the slightest. Is it helping us in any form? The answer is a resounding no.

We are far from alone in this struggle. Many small creators are facing the exact same uphill battle. Yet, as we seek redress for these wrongs, we encounter a cold and indifferent system. Social media platforms often dismiss our reports of copyright infringement or impersonation as unprovable, refusing to recognize the glaringly obvious similarities. When we try to stand up for ourselves, we’re met with shadow bans, and soon enough, our accounts are flagged as the “unoriginal” ones. The irony is that these platforms—armed with the technology to monitor these violations—choose instead to turn a blind eye, prioritizing the ad revenue generated by the impersonators over the rights of small creators.

The hardest truth is that fighting this battle often requires legal support—an avenue that most small creators simply cannot afford. We are left feeling helpless, caught in a system that seems designed to take advantage of us.

I’m reaching a breaking point. I’m seriously considering deleting it all. The accounts, the content, the story we’ve built around Lovely Lucy, Sweet Lew, and our Untamed Little Warriors. The very essence of our lives shared online could come to an end. I question whether this fight is worth it anymore. If our journey can no longer be told from our perspective, what is the point of continuing?

I can still hope that we inspire others, even amidst the chaos. But it's clear that without real support and protection for small creators, our stories may be lost forever in the crowded whirlwind of digital exploitation.

In the end, it’s about more than just our family’s journey; it’s about standing up for all the small creators who deserve the space to share their narratives authentically. We need a change, and we need it now.
